Getting a Motorcycle License in Illinois

To begin, no matter if you want to ride a dirt bike or a Harley, you will need a motorcycle license. In Illinois there are two different types of licenses, a Class L and Class M. Individuals should know that a motorcycle license is not needed for motor vehicles with an engine displacement of 50cc or less.

Class L Motorcycle Permit

If the individual is over the age of 18, they can get a class L instruction permit and it will be valid for 12 months. People that are under the age of 18 can apply for a 24-month permit. However, they must be able to show proof of completing a drivers education course prior to doing so. No matter the case, be sure to bring a valid form of identification with you. Next, you will have to pass a written knowledge exam. Once the permit is obtained, drivers are allowed to drive during daylight hours. In addition, a rider with a permit must be under supervision of a rider who is 21 years or older and has more than 1 year of riding experience.

Class L Motorcycle License

A class L license allows a rider to operate a motorbike that has less than 150cc displacement. Most times, people obtain this type of license to operate actual motorcycles rather than things like mopeds. In order to acquire a class L motorcycle license, an individual must pass a written driving test. In addition, they must also show proof that they completed an approved motorcycle training course. Lastly, a 10-dollar fee is required to get the physical license.

Class M Motorcycle Permit

Similar to a class L license, a person 18 years or older may obtain a 12-month permit. Also, anyone under 18 can apply for a 24-month permit as long as they show proof of completing a drivers education course. Furthermore, a person under 18 has to currently be enrolled in an approved motorcycle training course. Lastly, you will need proof of identity, your residency and be ready to pay permit fees.

Class M Motorcycle License

Unlike a class L motorcycle license, a class M license comes with no restrictions. To clarify, you are not limited to motorbikes with 150cc displacement and are free to ride any bike you like. In addition, a 10-dollar fee will be asked of you to obtain the license. Everything that was required of a person to get a class L license applies here as well. “Anyone over 18 can waive the need for a written and on cycle test by providing proof of completion of an approved IDOT motorcycle safety course.” -DMVcheatsheets.com
