E. Julia Almeida

Julia recently returned to practicing family law in November 2020, where she started her legal career. Since returning to family law, she has completed the divorce mediation training and is awaiting the training for collaborative divorce to expand the range of resolution options for her clients. She previously worked at a medium-sized general practice firm focusing on family law and also representing clients in criminal defense, bankruptcy, and probate matters. Her broad range of skills allows her understanding of how those other legal areas impact clients in family and criminal law proceedings.

In between her family law positions she was child abuse prosecutor with the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office maintaining a large case load with a busy trial schedule. Her role as a prosecutor required her to constantly balance assessing the safety risks of the parent’s behaviors against their rights to have as much contact as could be safely afforded and then to make recommendations in the best interests of the child. Seeing first-hand the damage caused by parental choices, she often encourages her clients to see their divorce through the eyes of their children. While the court process is temporary, their role as parents is permanent. Helping her clients formulate parenting plans that best suit their families and put them in the best roles for long term success is her goal. Julia tries to get to know her client’s individual objectives as every family is unique.

Julia has worked closely with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates Program), where community volunteers are matched with children in the child abuse and neglect court system. As a prosecutor she had a close working relationship with the CASA management and advocates and often spoke at legal training sessions. In her former law firm, she was a volunteer attorney for a CASA advocate. In law school she was a CASA advocate reporting on a family for years until their case came to closure. She asks anyone reading this bio to please consider helping with their time or donating to their local CASA program to help the less fortunate children in their community.

Julia received the Peskind Memorial Award for outstanding work in Family Law upon her graduation, cum laude, from the Northern Illinois University College of Law, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Illinois. Julia is available by phone or Zoom to discuss any potential legal law questions you may have. She appreciates it is challenging to deal with legal issues in the best of times, and we have all not had the best of times as of late. Julia has been a McHenry County resident for over 25 years She wishes you and your family all the best.
