On April 7, 2020, the Governor suspended the annual township meeting for the calendar year 2020 in the latest Executive Order 2020-22

The Township Code sets out the requirement for an annual town meeting held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month of April.

In 2020, these town hall-type meetings would have been required to be held on April 14, 2020 or April 21, 2020 — during the middle of the Governor’s stay at home order.

These meetings are different than the regular meetings of the township board of trustees, a recent Executive Order allowing public bodies to meet remotely did not apply to these town hall-type meetings.

Section 1 of the Executive Order 2020-22 provides:

“The provisions of the Township Code, 60 ILCS 1/30-5(a) and 30-5(b), requiring that each township’s annual meeting for calendar year 2020 be held on either April 14, 2020, or April 21, 2020, as suspended through the duration of the Gubernatorial Disaster Proclamations.”

The suspension, at present time, would be through the end of April.  Townships will wait word on how to reschedule the annual town meeting after the declaration is lifted.
