To begin, there are multiple scenarios in which a person in Illinois can acquire a business license. An individual can get their business license by mail, online, or in person. In addition, you will apply with the correct licensing or regulatory agency for your specific business. Often, your licensing requirements will depend on your type of business and zoning requirements. Lastly, in Illinois there are 3 main licensing jurisdictions, them being state, local, and federal.

How to get a State Business License

First, we will begin with how to acquire an Illinois state business license. In Illinois, you must have either a Certificate of Registration or a license to practice business, sometimes this is also referred to as a “sellers permit”. In addition, your type of business will determine whether you need a Certificate of Registration, (sometimes referred to as Illinois Business Authorization) or license. Furthermore, this permit allows you to register for the applicable taxes your business will be responsible for. Your taxes will depend on the specifics surrounding your business. Above all, if you wish to sell taxable goods in Illinois, a Certificate of Registration or license is required.

Local Business License

In Illinois, you may need additional permits to practice your type of business. To clarify, not all businesses are the same and certain requirements depend on the specifics of your business’ activity. “Check with the local Illinois city and county government offices where you plan to do business for more information.” – howtostartanllc.com
