5 Tips to Avoid Winter Car Accidents

Tip 1: Winterized Tires

To begin, this is a big tip that many fail to do. Above all, you will want to check your tire pressure and the tread on your tires prior to the winter months. Look for wear and cracks to identify the health of your tires. In addition, there are snow tires out there as well to help manage the snowy and icy conditions we expect to face. These tires increase traction on slippery surfaces and decrease your chance of getting into an accident.

Tip 2: Avoid Distracted Driving

In general, this is a tip that should be taken into account any time of the year. However, this is especially true when referring to the winter months in Illinois. Therefore, stay off your phone and avoid other distractions while behind the wheel this winter. Texts, emails, and phone calls can wait, your safety is more important.

Tip 3: Keep a Safe Distance from Others

Thirdly, in Illinois, the winter brings with it icy and snowy conditions. Therefore, you will need more time to brake in the event someone spins out in front of you for example. Be sure to drive accordingly this winter and leave yourself enough room to identify and avoid hazards.

Tip 4: Slow Down

Next, in the winter there are many more road hazards than when compared to other seasons. In Illinois, we are no stranger to the dangerous weather conditions winter is accompanied by. In addition to hazards like snow and ice, the winter is the busiest time of the year. It can be assumed that you will likely be traveling a bit. That being said, slow down this winter. Never be in a rush when getting behind the wheel, take your time and drive safe.

Tip 5: Check the Weather

Lastly, dangerous weather in the winter is unavoidable in the sense that it will occur. Often, brutal snow storms, icy rain, and bad weather persist during the winter months in Illinois. Therefore, be sure to check your local weather before deciding to drive. Plan accordingly and be sure to make the safest decision. If you have the thought that it is too dangerous to drive, then it probably is.
