    Maintenance (Alimony) still remains a Hot Topic in Illinois

    Maintenance (formerly known as alimony) has been a hot topic in Illinois lately.   Last year the General Assembly passed a modification to Section 504 of the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage of Act which provision controls maintenance awards.   This modification became effective as of January 1, 2015 seemingly for any final judgement entered after that date, even if the case had previously been filed.   In addition to this recent change, almost all of the rest of the statute is undergoing very substantial revisions.   This first message will address the fundamental changes to the law regarding maintenance.   After that, we will follow with a series of messages touching on several of the other modifications coming down the pipeline.    As of January 1, 2015 Illinois has adopted “guideline maintenance” but only for marriages in which the comb...

    Effective January 1, 2015 is 55 ILCS 5/5-1133 entitled Counties of greater than 300,000 but less than 2,000,000; reporting of information goes into affect which provides as follows:   § 5-1133. Counties of greater than 300,000 but less than 2,000,000; reporting of information. A county board in a county with a population greater than 300,000 but less than 2,000,000 may by ordinance require any unit of local government or agency to which the county board chairman or county executive nominates and the county board confirms a majority of member appointments to provide the county with detailed information, including, but not limited to, the unit's or agency's finances, budget, contracts, employment, and ethics policies, in the manner and with the frequency specified by the ordinance.     Some employers might think they have received a windfall when they allow or even encourage employees to use their laptops, smartphones, tablets or other mobile devices   for work, whether at the office or during non-working hours.   After all, the employer probably has not provided or paid for the employee’s own mobile device or the costs associated with it.   How can the employer go wrong?
