Maintenance (formerly known as alimony) has been a hot topic in Illinois lately.  Last year the General Assembly passed a modification to Section 504 of the Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage of Act which provision controls maintenance awards.  This modification became effective as of January 1, 2015 seemingly for any final judgement entered after that date, even if the case had previously been filed.  In addition to this recent change, almost all of the rest of the statute is undergoing very substantial revisions.  This first message will address the fundamental changes to the law regarding maintenance.  After that, we will follow with a series of messages touching on several of the other modifications coming down the pipeline.   As of January 1, 2015 Illinois has adopted “guideline maintenance” but only for marriages in which the combined...
